Trailer Specifications

Choosing the right type of cargo trailer has a direct impact on loading capacity, transportation efficiency, and cargo safety.

This page presents the most commonly used trailer types in European road transport, along with their key characteristics and typical use cases.

Dimensions and capacities may vary slightly depending on the operator and manufacturer.

  • The Curtain Side trailer is one of the most commonly used trailer types in international road transport. Its main advantage is flexible loading - from the rear, sides, and in many cases, from the top.

    Typical internal dimensions are approximately 13.62 m × 2.48 m × 2.70 m, with a volume of around 91 m³ and a payload of approximately 32.8 tons.

This trailer is particularly efficient for palletized cargo, general cargo, and shipments where flexible loading is required.

  • The Mega Trailer is distinguished by its increased internal height, making it ideal for high pallets, lightweight but volumetric cargo, and specialized loading configurations.

    Typical internal dimensions are approximately 13.62 m × 2.48 m × 2.94 m, with a volume of around 100 m³ and a payload of approximately 32.8 tons.

In practice, the Mega Trailer is most effective when additional volume is more important than standard height limitations.

  • The Reefer Trailer is used for temperature-controlled road transportation. It is designed for cargo that requires a chilled or stable temperature throughout the entire transit process.

    Typical internal dimensions are approximately 13.31 m × 2.48 m × 2.60 m, with a volume of around 85 m³ and a payload of approximately 31 tons.

Reefer trailers are recommended for transporting food products, pharmaceuticals, and other temperature-sensitive cargo.

  • The Box Trailer is a closed, rigid-body trailer used when cargo requires additional protection from external factors and side or top loading is not necessary.

    Typical dimensions are approximately 13.6 m × 2.48 m × 2.65 m, with a capacity of around 90 m³.

It is commonly used for standard commercial cargo where a fully enclosed and stable loading space is a priority.

  • Open trailers and flatbed platforms are used for oversized, heavy, or excessively tall cargo that cannot be accommodated in a standard enclosed trailer.

This type of transport is especially important for construction materials, metal structures, machinery, and project cargo.

Its main advantage is the ability to use specialized loading methods and the reduced limitations on cargo dimensions.

  • If the cargo is standard palletized or general cargo and flexible loading is required, the most practical option is a Standard Trailer (Curtain Side).

If additional internal height is the main requirement, a Mega Trailer is the better choice.

For temperature-sensitive cargo, a Reefer Trailer should be used, while Open Trailers / Flatbed are recommended for oversized and project cargo.

The final decision should always be based on the cargo’s dimensions, weight, loading method, and route.

If you need help selecting the right trailer for your specific cargo, the Vengo Group team will assist you in determining the optimal solution based on the route, volume, and loading requirements.
