Dangerous Goods (ADR)

Dangerous goods are substances and materials that may pose risks to people, infrastructure, the environment, or other cargo during transportation.

Their transportation is subject to specific international regulations and safety requirements aimed at preventing accidents, damage, and environmental impact.

In international practice, dangerous goods are classified into 9 main classes.

For road transport, classification and requirements are widely regulated under ADR regulations, while sea, air, and rail transport are governed by their respective specialized frameworks.

Each shipment is assigned a UN number, class code, and specific requirements for packaging, labeling, and documentation.

ADR Classes

  • This class includes substances and items that pose a risk of explosion or severe reaction. Such cargo requires special protection, strict packaging, and enhanced safety measures.

  • Includes compressed, liquefied, or dissolved gases. This class may contain flammable, non-flammable, or toxic gases, and their transportation involves risks related to pressure, leakage, and ignition.

  • This class covers liquids that produce flammable vapors and pose a fire risk. Special attention is required for packaging, temperature control, and leak prevention during transport.

  • Includes substances that may ignite due to heat, sparks, friction, or self-reaction. It also covers materials that may ignite upon contact with air or water.

  • These substances may not be flammable themselves but can support combustion or intensify fires. Organic peroxides require strict temperature and safety control.

  • Includes substances that are harmful to human health, as well as infectious materials. Strict isolation, safe packaging, and proper labeling are critical.

  • Radioactive cargo requires special licenses, packaging, labeling, and control. Transportation is highly regulated and handled on a case-by-case basis.

  • These substances can cause damage to human skin, metals, or other surfaces. Special attention is required for packaging durability, leak prevention, and safe handling.

  • This class includes substances that do not fall under other categories but still pose significant risks during transportation. It may include environmentally hazardous or specially regulated cargo.

  • Four key factors are critical when transporting dangerous goods: correct classification, proper identification of the UN number, appropriate packaging and labeling, and accurate documentation.

In practice, the most common risks are associated with incorrect classification or incomplete documentation. For this reason, ADR and other regulatory frameworks strictly govern the transportation process.

  • When transporting dangerous goods, each request is assessed individually based on the cargo class, route, mode of transport, and required permits.

For this reason, such shipments always require technical and documentation review to ensure a safe and compliant solution.
